Palm Tree Care

Palms provide a gorgeous tropical look, helping you to achieve that vacation vibe. Sydney is home to a wide variety of different palm species, with many of them thriving in its temperate climate. Something to be aware of though is that the tropical look does not come without its fair share of maintenance requirements. So, if you would rather be lounging in a deck chair, rather than gardening, palms may not be the best tree of choice. If you already have them on your property then this would not be news to you. They are prolific in their dropping of seeds and fronds, keeping their owners incredibly busy.

The most common palms you are likely to find around Sydney include the Bismarkia, Golden Cane, Chinese Windmill, Cascade, Nicolai and Alexandra palms. On top of these, Cocos, Date and Bangalow palms are also extremely popular but will really thrive in slightly warmer and wetter climates. Despite their aesthetic popularity, many palm tree planters often end up regretting planting these trees in their yard. So, if you’re considering palm tree removal Sydney then read on to better understand what you will need to be aware of.

A palm tree’s gorgeous aesthetics and durability are also the very factors that make their removal so challenging. Typical palm tree removal Sydney will take two to three hours to complete, depending on the context of the tree. Small palms may be less than this but large ones can require up to a whole day to properly remove.

As palm tree trunks are incredibly smooth, with no lower branches to take hold of, arborists will typically use climbing spikes to assist with their ascent. For maintenance, these spikes will not typically be used as they can be highly damaging to a palm tree’s health but they do offer the greatest level of safety and stability when removing the palm tree.

It is incredibly important to assess the tree and the site before beginning any removal. Palm tree trunks and their fronds are weighty and can cause significant damage to surrounding structures or gardens, not to mention posing a risk to people in the vicinity. In order to achieve the safe and effective removal of a palm tree, arborists will typically require a crew. These tend to consist of a climber, a backup climber and two ground crew. If you were contemplating on doing this yourself, then hopefully this puts the process into some perspective.

Funnily enough, the climbing and lowering of the segments of the palm tree can often be the most straightforward aspect of palm tree removal Sydney. The processing of the green waste created by palm trees is where a lot of the challenges exist. Palm tree bark is incredibly rough and spiky, meaning it is unable to be processed through a woodchipper, like most other trees. As a result, the dense wood, which of course is incredibly heavy, then needs to be transported offsite and processed at another facility. As you can imagine, this adds to the overall time and costs associated with palm tree removal.

Whilst palm trees have shallow root systems, they do fan out, rather than delving deep and will continue to rob the surrounding soil of valuable moisture and nutrients. As a result, much like removing any other tree, it is paramount that you grind the stump of your palm tree out, rather than leaving it to rot in the garden. Not only does the removal of the stump allow for the space to then be occupied by something more beautiful and productive, it also guards against the associated problems that leaving a tree stump in the ground can bring.

If you’ve had enough of picking up after your palm or it’s not well and in need of removal, then get in touch with Arbor Co to make a plan on where to go next.
