Stump Removal Sydney: Enliven Your Garden Again

Updated: 4 hours ago

Many say stump removal is just clearing the dead trees away, but the actual process is much more complex.

At Arbor Co Tree Services, we not only remove hazards but also preserve biodiversity for long term development. We execute tailored services to ensure that every stump removal is handled with professionalism and empathy.

A recent project that we completed in Avalon speaks of how we combine arborist expertise with the care for environmental impact.

A Tree That’s Not Quite Dead

Living nearby a remnant endangered Spotted Gum Forest, our client Claire Lane and Miles Sterrick were deeply saddened when their favourite tree suddenly died. Aware of the ecological importance of this beach-grown Spotted Gum, Claire and Miles decided to preserve it and turn it into a habitat for nearby galah birds.

After a few dead ends, they found Arbor Co Tree Services to execute the project because of our passion for habitat creation and our remarkably specialised tools.

This is how we assessed their situation:

Firstly, we found the trunk of this Spotted Gum is solid enough to remain standing for a long time. Then, we identified potential hazards that could arise with its branches. In the end, we decided to remove excess tree limbs and create artificial tree hollows on the trunk.

Artificial tree hollows are vital in the survival of many species, including 17% of birds, 42% of mammals and 28% of reptiles. Given it takes 100 - 150 years for a tree hollow to form naturally, our approach can greatly elongate the ecological contribution of this dead Spotted Gum, and remove danger from our client’s property by cleaning away branches.

Bringing New Life

Led by our arborist Harrison Judd, our team carefully created 3 hollows to fit in nest boxes for two Glider species.

Besides creating a lively ‘critter condominium’ for the animals, we also saved our clients a huge amount of money. As Miles explains, “If we were going to get the tree chopped down and taken away, it was probably going to be double that (amount of money in creating tree hollows).”

Moreover, even though not all dead trees can be turned into a habitat, there is no cost to getting a tree assessed. As Claire advises, “Definitely have a think about it before you decide to remove a tree if they can be retained for habitat. It’s a lovely thing to do.”

What is Your Tree’s Condition?

In the above circumstance, we have preserved our client’s tree because it is solid and healthy enough for doing so. However, there could be times when a complete stump removal is necessary. Consider reaching out to a stump removal Sydney expert when these conditions happen:

  1. Safety Hazards

Stumps can pose tripping hazards in yards or gardens, particularly for children and elderly individuals. If this applies to you, contact an arborist to remove them completely.

  1. Landscaping Plans

If you plan to redesign your garden or build structures, removing stumps is essential to prepare the land. This is because some roots may not be completely dead, or their decay may cause unwanted structure issues for what you plan to build on top.

  1. Pest Infestations

Leftover stumps can attract pests like termites or ants, which may spread to healthy trees and fauna in your garden.

How to Remove a Stump

Removing a stump requires careful planning and execution:

  1. Assess the Area: Before starting the removal process, evaluate the site around the stump for obstacles such as roots or nearby structures.

  2. Gather Tools: You will need tools such as a shovel, axe, chainsaw (for larger stumps), and potentially a stump grinder.

  3. Cut the Stump: If using a chainsaw, cut the stump as close to the ground as possible. This step makes it easier to remove.

  4. Dig Around the Stump: Use a shovel to dig around the stump, exposing its roots. This step is crucial for understanding how deep the roots go.

  5. Remove the Roots: Cut through any visible roots using an axe or saw. For stubborn roots, consider using a stump grinder or hiring professionals.

  6. Extract the Stump: Once most of the roots are cut, use leverage to pull out the stump from its hole.

  7. Fill in the Hole: After removing the stump, fill in the hole with soil and compact it down to prevent settling.

  8. Clean Up: Finally, clear away any debris from your yard and consider recycling the wood into mulch.

While DIY is an option for some homeowners, hiring stump removal Sydney experts like Arbor Co Tree Services can ensure your safety and efficiency, especially when large stumps are involved.
